Review: Midnight in Paris

Laura Griffin - Review: Midnight in Paris - Ma Vie Francaise - My French Life - www.MyFrenchLife.org

I saw Midnight in Paris last night. It made me so excited about art, litterature, beauty and expression. I laughed about how Woody Allen made lead character Gil (Owen Wilson) look like him; lanky, dishevelled, swimming in ill-fitting tweed jackets. And ‘sad’ eyes, as Picasso’s mistress Adriana (French actress Marion Cotillard) says. Fast talking and neurotic.

The film reminded me about how wonderful Paris is; how many artists and entire movements have found inspiration there. Midnight in Paris shows us but a handful of these people; writers like Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and T. S. Eliot; artists like Piscasso, Matisse, Degas and Dali (whose surrealist monologue was one of the funniest parts of the film).

On the surface, Midnight in Paris is a romantic comedy about a young engaged couple forced to confront their differences. But it is much more than that; it is an adventure story through time and a story about a writer who learns much about his writing, his voice, his passions, his time and himself.

Please let me know what you think about the film.
